I purchased the kit as a last measure before I was going to give up on it and the results were great but not perfect. I have tried 3rd party profiles for my Epson 4000 and all of them failed. I have the Spyder 3 Elite package and I'm very happy with it. I'd only get this if you're really keen on colour management. The very high end profiling options are the Eye-One XTreme from X-Rite which would probably be overkill for just monitor/printer profiling but can pretty much do anything and the hardware is well supported by 3rd party programs for colour analysis. Apparently it's a bit hit and miss with the QC on the monitor colorimeter so I'd recommend the ColorMunki unless you really wanted the SR kit. If you are more into the printer profiling process then the other option is the Spyder 3 Studio SR which uses a monitor colorimeter & spectrocolorimeter for printer profiling but has significantly more flexibility in the printer profiling (ie, number of patches, type of profile and modifying how the profile is made). My experience has been good with this process and I use this most of the time for friends and experimenting. Printer profiling is handled by 2 sets of 50 patches to build a perceptual profile with the option for a 3rd or more set of patches to help tune it. If you want to calibrate both your printer & monitors probably the best value is the X-Rite ColorMunki Photo which is fairly fool proof and simple to use and is a true spectrophotometer.

There is also the eye1 pro from X-rite, the same people who make ColorMunki but I have no experience with this one. I would stay away from Huey-pro I always find the profiled monitor too green for my taste but it is quite cheap. I personally find the color rendition of the ColorMunki more pleasing than the Spyder but this is a personal matter. If you want to profile the printer as well then ColorMunki comes into its own.

the Mac for some reason does not provide any hardware adjustment beside the Brightness control so in the end if u just want to profile the monitor only the Spyder and the Coloreyes are a powefull combination.

ColorEyes will have to be purchased as a separate item though but it does have a plug in specifically for Mac displays. Spyder Elite can make good profiles for your display and is also compatible with ColorEyes software which is highly thought of. As a complete monitor to print package I prefer the ColorMunki. I have ColorMunki, Spyder Elite, Spyder 2, and Huey pro.
